It was written by Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs in the VA’s Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kayla Williams. The blog was posted on September 20, 2021, the tenth anniversary of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.

U.S. Attorney General Sued Texas Over SB 8

U.S. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland announced that he has filed a lawsuit against the State of Texas to stop unconstitutional Senate Bill 8. It was allowed to become law because the conservative members of the Supreme Court literally did nothing. The result was that Texas was able to make an unconstitutional abortion law go into effect.

U.S. Department of Education Discharges Student Loans

On August 19, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education announced that over 323,000 borrowers who have a total and permanent disability (TPD) will receive more than $5.8 billion in automatic student loan discharges due to a new regulation. The change will apply to borrowers who are identified through an existing data match with the Social Security Administration (SSA). It will begin with the September quarterly match with SSA.

President Biden Recognized Pride Month

President Biden officially recognized Pride Month in a proclamation titled: “FACT SHEET: The Biden-Harris Administration Champions LGBTQ+ Equality and Marks Pride Month”. It was issued on June 1, 2021.

There have been reports that Biden is the first President of the United States to recognize Pride Month, but that’s not accurate. Two of the previous presidents have also officially recognized Pride Month.

He is the first President of the United States to issue a proclamation recognizing Transgender Day of Visibility. March 31, 2021, was also the day when the Pentagon released new policies for Transgender troops that included a path to transitioning while serving their country.
