Diablo Book Reviews, Diablo III 1 comment on Hatred and Discipline by Micky Neilson

Hatred and Discipline by Micky Neilson

Hatred and Discipline is a short story that was released in 2012. It was part of something Blizzard was doing in the days before Diablo III was released. You can read Hatred and Discipline online (or download it as a PDF).

Blizzard revealed each of the five classes of playable characters in Diablo III, one by one, before the release of the game.  There was a “Gathering of the Heroes” page (which has since been taken down) where players could watch a class video, and learn more about a specific class.

There was a short story that accompanied the information about each of the classes.  Hatred and Discipline focuses on a Demon Hunter named Valla.

The artwork you see in this post came from the Battle.net website.  When Hatred and Discipline was posted, it used this artwork (but cropped it so that it focused on the Demon Hunter’s face.

Diablo Book Reviews, Diablo III 3 comments on Diablo III: Storm of Light by Nate Kenyon

Diablo III: Storm of Light by Nate Kenyon

Diablo III Storm of Light by Nate KenyonDiablo III: Storm of Light is Nate Kenyon’s second book that was written in the Diablo “universe”. Like his first one, Diablo III: The Order, this book is about situations and adventures that take place just outside of the story you learn as you play through the Diablo III game.  If you ever wondered what happened in between Act IV and Act V in Diablo III, this is the book that has the answers you are seeking.

This book review will not include any “spoilers” from the book.  However, I am going to reference parts of the Diablo III video game.  If you are someone who has not yet completed the game through the end of Act IV, you may want to bookmark this review and return to it after you have seen the cinematic for Act V.

And Bring Forth the Dark

Diablo: Sword of Justice is a comic that is set in the Diablo universe. It was written by Aaron Williams, and the Lead Artist was Joseph LaCroix. It started out as a limited edition series of five comics that were released sometime in 2012.

If you missed out on those, don’t worry. They have been put together into a nice, glossy, paperback that includes each of the five comics, one right after the other. The story moves along quickly, with plenty of action, and a touch of the darkness and creepiness that fans of the Diablo games (and books) will enjoy.

Diablo Book Reviews, Diablo III 3 comments on Diablo III: The Order by Nate Kenyon

Diablo III: The Order by Nate Kenyon

Diablo III: The Order was written by Nate Kenyon. It is the first book that was written with a connection to the Diablo III game. This is not the first time that Nate Kenyon has written for Blizzard. He is also the author of Starcraft Ghost: Specters. However, Diablo III: The Order is his first foray into the Diablo universe, and, in my opinion, he gets it exactly right.

The beta for Diablo III has long since ended, (and I miss it so!) When I first heard that the title of this book was “The Order”, it immediately brought to mind the NPC (non-player character) follower called The Templar. Those of you were in the beta, or who jumped in on the open beta weekend, probably played far enough into the beta to find him. You quickly learn that his name is Kormac, and he has quite a bit to say about “The Order”. Initially, I though this new Diablo book would be about his background.

Diablo Book Reviews, Diablo III 1 comment on The Sin War: Book Three – The Veiled Prophet by Richard A. Knaak

The Sin War: Book Three – The Veiled Prophet by Richard A. Knaak

You should read the first two books in The Sin War series before you read The Veiled Prophet. It will make a lot more sense that way. This review might have some “spoilers”. It is almost impossible to write about the third book in a trilogy without giving something away. I did my best to keep the “spoilers” to a minimum, however.

The Sin War is a trilogy of books that takes place within the “universe” of the Diablo games. All three were written by Richard A. Knaak, an author whose writing I always enjoy. According to the Diablo Wiki, everything that happens in The Sin War Trilogy takes place around 3000 years before the darkening of Tristram. Or, if you like, it takes place before the Tristram that you knew when you were playing the original Diablo game.
