The Dragon is on Fire – Episode 038

In this episode, I read to you a piece of writing I wrote in 2009. It is about something that happened while I was working at my very first summer job – at an amusement park – in the late 1980’s.

I read “The Dragon is on Fire” in episode 038 of Words of Jen.

The Dragon is on Fire

I wrote this piece in 2009 on the blog of a podcast that I used to do (and that no longer is online).  This piece of writing is about real events that happened decades ago, at my first job.

The amusement park I worked at hired teenagers, and didn’t put much effort into training them before handing them the keys to one of the rides.  This amusement park closed a long time ago – and then reopened under a new owner.

I read “The Dragon is on Fire” in episode 038 of my Words of Jen podcast.

Desperately Seeking Mario – Episode 037

In this episode, I read to you a piece of writing I wrote on April 6, 2015.  It is about what happened after I got my very first smartphone. Strangers started calling me in an effort to reach someone named Mario.

I read “Desperately Seeking Mario” in episode 037 of Words of Jen.

Desperately Seeking Mario

I wrote this piece on April 6, 2015, not long after I got my very first smartphone.  Before this, I was using a flip phone, because it seemed easier. Shawn had to talk me into switching to a iPhone.

I didn’t try to transfer my old phone over to the new phone because I wanted a fresh start.  That turned out to be a mistake.

I read “Desperately Seeking Mario” in episode 037 of my Words of Jen podcast.

Memories of Toys R Us – Episode 036

In this episode, I read a piece of writing that I wrote on May 4, 2018. The inspiration for this piece came from something in the news. Toys R Us had filed for bankruptcy, and it looked like it wouldn’t be around much longer.  This caused me to feel nostalgia for Toys R Us.

I read “Memories of Toys R Us” in episode 036 of Words of Jen.

Barnes & Noble Fired Their Workers – Episode 035

In this episode, I read a piece of writing that I wrote on April 6, 2018. The piece was inspired by something that was in the news a few months ago.  Barnes & Noble had suddenly fired many of their employees.  There was a time when I worked for Barnes & Noble, and I had things to say about this news.

I read “Barnes & Noble Fired its Workers” in episode 035 of Words of Jen.

Barnes & Noble Fired Their Workers

I wrote this piece on April 6, 2018, in response to something that was in the news a few months before.  I read “Barnes & Noble Fired Their Workers” on episode 35 of Words of Jen.

In February of 2018, Barnes & Noble fired a lot of their long-term employees with no warning. People who had been loyal workers for years and years were suddenly out of a job (and in some cases, without a severance package). Some were told they could apply for their job again – but would receive the starting rate of pay.

As a person who worked for Barnes & Noble for a total of five, frantic, frustrating holiday seasons, I have a lot to say about this situation. To be clear, I was not among the people who were fired. I quit Barnes & Noble long before this happened.

I Tried Bubblews – and Quit

Years ago, I put time and effort into creating blog posts on a website called Bubblews (which no longer exists.)  It was one of those sites that pays writers by the page click.  At first, Bubblews seemed to have potential. That didn’t last, and I eventually quit.  I wrote about Bubblews on November 19, 2014.

I read “I Tried Bubblews – and Quit” in episode 34 of my Words of Jen podcast.

I Tried Bubblews – And Quit – Episode 034

In this episode, I read a piece of writing that I wrote on November 19, 2014 (and then added an update to later on).  The piece was written about a website called Bubblews that closed down forever. I wasn’t surprised when it closed because it had a lot of problems.

I read “I Tried Bubblews – And Quit” in episode 34 of Words of Jen.
